Why don’t we punish treason anymore?

China sentences ex-official to death

Zheng Xiaoyu, the former head of State Food and Drug Administration, was convicted of accepting bribes from drug companies.

Well, I’ve got to hand it to the Chinese. Say what you want about Communism and what-not, but at least they don’t put up with their officials taking bribes. In fact, it appears as though they consider this a form of treason. I think this is pretty appropriate, given that the result of accepting these “contributions” was the lowering of standards in food and drug production, which led directly to dozens of deaths.

“Zheng was supposed to use the power given to him by the state and the people seriously and honestly, but instead he has ignored their vital interests… by taking the bribes,” Xinhua quoted the court as saying.

Sounds like treason to me. Now, how is this relevant to me, you ask? Well, I believe a lot more treason goes on in this country than most are willing to believe, we just choose to ignore it because it’s become the status quo. Of course, I’m talking about “campaign contributions.” I don’t think any reasonable person can defend the cause of many of the lobbyists in Washington. If you have seen Thank You For Smoking, you might have an idea of the kind of scumbags we’re talking about.

The Merchants of Death

What’s interesting to me is the fact that everybody seems to know that Washington is run by lobbyists, but no one cares! If our congressmen and senators continue to ignore us in favor of wealthy “special interest groups,” that’s taxation without representation, folks, and revolutions have been started over this sort of thing.
